Plan the load and distance before you bury the cable.

10/2 landscape wire can reduce voltage drop on long, heavily loaded runs—but only after the wattage, farthest fixture, transformer capacity, and route are planned together.

1. Calculate load and distance first

Wire gauge should be selected from the real electrical load and the longest conductor path—not lawn acreage alone. Build the lighting plan on paper before buying cable.

Total fixture watts

Add the rated wattage of every fixture on one transformer circuit.

Circuit watts = fixture 1 + fixture 2 + …

Leave transformer headroom. A practical planning target is to keep the expected load near or below 80% of the transformer's rated capacity.

Farthest electrical run

Measure the cable path from the transformer to the farthest fixture, including turns, branches, risers, and service loops.

Purchase length = planned route + 10–15%

Use the longest loaded path when checking voltage drop—not the straight-line distance across the yard.

Do not size by distance alone. Voltage drop changes with current, conductor length, transformer output, connection quality, and circuit layout. Confirm the plan with the transformer maker's chart or a qualified installer, then test the finished circuit.

2. Verify whether 10/2 is necessary

Thicker cable is valuable when distance and load rise together. It is not automatically the best choice for every zone.

3. Choose a roll length from the route—not a guess

Mark the transformer, every fixture, every branch, and every change of direction. Measure each cable path and add a controlled allowance for routing and service loops.

Buying rule: add the measured lengths of every home run and branch, then add 10–15%. Do not add the transformer-to-farthest-fixture distance only if the layout contains separate branches.

4. Plan the transformer and circuits

One long daisy chain

Uses less cable, but the last fixtures can see the greatest voltage loss. It also places more of the circuit behind every upstream connection.

Hub or multiple home runs

Uses more cable but shortens loaded paths, improves balance, and makes expansion or troubleshooting more manageable.

  • Mount the transformer in an approved location with ventilation and service access.
  • Separate circuits when transformer capacity, voltage-drop targets, or zone control require it.
  • Keep a clear route map showing cable lengths, branch points, fixtures, and connector locations.
  • Before trenching, have underground utilities marked and follow local electrical and burial rules.

5. Install the wire and protect every branch

De-energize and dry-fit

Disconnect power. Lay the wire above ground, place fixtures, and confirm that every planned run reaches with service slack.

Prepare the trench

Follow fixture, cable, transformer, and local requirements. Protect the route from edging, digging, irrigation work, and vehicle traffic.

Lay without strain

Avoid sharp bends, stretched cable, crushed insulation, and tight joints. Leave accessible service loops at fixtures and branches.

Make waterproof branches

Use connectors approved for the conductor size and wet location. Complete the mechanical connection before sealing it.

Inspect before burial

Pull-test every joint. Confirm polarity, complete seals, intact insulation, and a clean route before covering the cable.

Energize and measure

Power the circuit only after inspection. Measure at the transformer and farthest fixture under load; correct weak connections or circuit imbalance before final closeout.

6. Test voltage before final closeout

At the transformer

Record output voltage with the lighting load on. Confirm the selected tap and transformer instructions.

At the farthest fixture

Measure under the same load. Compare the reading with the fixture manufacturer's operating range and your design target.

If the far end is weak

Check polarity, loose or undersized connectors, damaged wire, overloaded circuits, and excessive run length before replacing fixtures.

Document the result

Keep the route map, transformer settings, circuit loads, and final voltage readings for future maintenance.

Use this as a purchase-planning framework. The exact cable and connector quantity comes from the measured layout and fixture connection method.
