One crimper. Six dies. Is this the right set for your bench?

1. Unbox the working set—not eight separate tools

One frame with quick die release and pressure adjustment. The installed die determines the terminal profile it can crimp.

1 wire stripper

Prepare the conductor before crimping. Match strip length to the terminal and inspect for nicked or missing strands.

6 interchangeable dies

Different profiles share the same frame. A storage case keeps the tools and die pairs organized between jobs.

Plan consumables separately. This is the tool-only set. Do not assume connectors, solder, heat-shrink tubing or a heat source are included.

2. Match the die to the terminal before the AWG

The review’s kit overview covers the families below. The usable wire range varies by die: check the markings on the supplied profile and the exact terminal’s instructions. One color or AWG number does not establish compatibility across different connector designs.

Heat-shrink crimp terminals Use the matching crimp profile and wire range; inspect the sleeve for damage. These are not solder-seal sleeves.
Insulated terminals Match barrel construction and the die cavity; connector color alone is not enough.
Non-insulated terminals Match barrel size, material and the specified crimp shape.
Open-barrel terminals Match the wings and required conductor/insulation support geometry.
Wire-end terminals / ferrules Confirm ferrule size and the crimp profile accepted by the receiving terminal.
Solar contacts Verify the exact contact model, cable range and manufacturer-approved tooling. A “solar” label is not universal compatibility.

Check the current product listing and supplied die markings before ordering; do not apply one die’s AWG range to the whole set.

3. Rapid Replace: check the changeover, then the fit

The quick-release mechanism lets you change die pairs within the same frame. Its practical value is greatest when you repeatedly switch between terminal families. Faster changeovers only help if the correct pair is installed and fully secured.

  1. Choose the pair: identify the terminal construction and conductor range before removing the existing dies.
  2. Release and seat: follow the tool’s die-release instructions, install both matching halves and confirm that they are retained correctly.
  3. Check alignment: make a sample crimp on the intended wire and terminal before continuing the job.

4. Read the strength demonstration correctly

A dramatic load test is useful viewing, but it does not isolate every part of the connection. Wire, joint preparation, terminal or solder, loading direction and the test setup all affect the result.

A solder-joint demo is not a crimper rating

The video’s 100 LB dumbbell premise must not be read as a guaranteed pull strength for this tool set. This guide does not report a standardized crimp pull-test result, crimp-height data or repeatability measurements. Do not use the demonstration as approval for lifting or load-bearing service.

For your actual crimp: follow the terminal maker’s inspection and test requirements. A completed ratchet cycle and a simple hand tug do not replace a specified pull test or dimensional check.

5. Use the star wheel carefully—and inspect the result

Pressure adjustment helps tune the ratchet mechanism; it does not turn the wrong die into the right one. Follow the tool instructions for adjustment and validate sample crimps after a change. More pressure is not automatically better.

  • Before crimping: isolate power, confirm wire and terminal compatibility, and check strip length and strand condition.
  • During the cycle: keep the terminal square in the correct cavity, insert the wire fully and complete the normal ratchet cycle.
  • After release: look for correct conductor capture, intact insulation and no split barrel or misplaced wings. Apply the terminal manufacturer’s acceptance checks.

6. Solar, auto or home? Start with the connector

Solar wiring

Check the exact contact series, cable size and approved crimp tooling. Similar-looking solar contacts are not automatically interchangeable.

Automotive work

Identify whether the repair uses heat-shrink, insulated or open-barrel terminals. Match the required profile and environmental rating.

Home / workshop

Match ferrules or terminals to the equipment’s connection requirements. A multi-die set is not approval for every household wiring method.

The project name describes the setting, not guaranteed compatibility. Confirm the exact terminal, wire and die combination each time.

Verdict: buy for repeated variety

The HX1706 set makes sense when your bench regularly needs several of its supported profiles and you want one organized tool-and-die system. If nearly every job uses the same connector family, a correctly matched dedicated crimper may be the simpler purchase.
